indie brainiac 5

Based primarily on the Legion of Superheroes TV series( 2006 ); headcanon heavy and spin-off comic cherrypicking to fill in spaces. Follows the Season 2 finale continuity over the spin-off comic continuity. Please read my rules of engagement and follow them.

PSA
Rules are subject to revision or addition at any time should something arise.

rule i.  Blog is 21+ only and prefers to write with mutuals. Plotting and discussion is encouraged and heavily desired for long-term writing. Crossovers and OCs welcome. Discord is available upon request and at my discretion. rule ii.  I’m indifferent to writing style and icons are not necessary to write with me, but anything overly formatted with extremely tiny text + fancy textwork to the point of being unreadable will be ignored. If you want to write with me, and that’s your usual style, please use only small text and minimal textwork. It overwhelms me otherwise. rule iii.  I have periods of extreme inspiration and will knock out replies back to back. And then I will go dormant and be silent for days to weeks. I also don’t have any issues with people unfollowing me for any reason, though it does dishearten me and allow me to apologize ahead of time if that happens. Please be considerate of this, if I don’t follow you.

rule iv.  Given the nature of the TV series being cancelled after Season 2’s finale and cliffhanger, my knowledge will be supplemented by some information from the comics( spin-off and general dc ). If you are expecting a purely accurate DC LOSH comic rendition of Brainiac 5, I'm sorry to disappoint you. rule v.  Shipping is extremely low priority for me and even less for Brainy. I ship chemistry primarily and am willing for crossovers — that said, I don't have any biases towards any one ship. All usual shipping no-no's are in effect; primarily no incestuous or underage ships. NSFW will also not really be present outside of an aged up verse — and even then I prefer to leave that sort of writing to Discord privacy. rule vi.  I write Brainy from the perspective of an autistic person and therefore see a lot of autistic traits in him. While I am unsure on the logistics on applying a human brain difference to an alien being — to me, especially after the finale, Brainiac 5 meets the criteria for being autistic and I will write him as such.

Born on the planet Colu, Querl Dox — known later as Brainiac 5 — was much like the rest of his race. Except for his heightened level of intelligence... and emotions. Most Coluan's reside in humanoid forms comprised of both cybernetics and trace amounts of organics; allowing them the capacity to reproduce through meshing of data and DNA. Unfortunately, the need for intense defining "family lines" was superficial at best with the Coluan's naturally occurring Hivemind state — with some exceptions.

The Brainiac Legacy
Over the centuries, a particular genetic encryption traversed through the Coluan data pool, resulting in higher than typical levels of intelligence among a small part of population. It also resulted in certain... deviances. The first Brainiac — Vril Dox — took a desire for knowledge to an extreme form; seeking to collect and preserve it under his own control. His original body was dismantled, but his data was reintroduced into the Hivemind under severe procautions to both contain and maintain the knowledge he had acquired. Each subsequent Brainiac descendant was kept within the Hivemind to keep them from falling prey to the corrupting influence of the original — with varying degrees of success.
Upon reaching the 31st century, Querl Dox comes online into the Coluan Hivemind and is recognized as the newest member of this genetic encryption. His deviance, however, was mild compared to his predecessors: heightened intensity of emotions on par with his intellect. This left the young android to develop a conflicted personality; only worsened by his people's influence on collectivity and logic. While he found significant respect and accolade with his people, Querl still felt disconnected despite the internal link he shared with the other Coluan; namely due to his emotions.
Which comes to a head as he approached the age of 12, gaining his title and formally requesting to leave both the Hivemind and Colu to Earth to be among human beings — which he surmises will help him gain a better control over his emotional deficiencies. The main mouthpiece of the Hivemind warns him against this, stating without the Hivemind's protection, he will become vulnerable to the corruption within his programming of his ancestor; but Querl counters her argument with the fact his unchecked emotions will present the same fate. At a standstill, Querl allows the access of that part of his programming to be locked behind several firewalls within his own system — allowing him to safely detach from the Hivemind without risking being overwhelmed by any lingering influence. With this done, he is given leave to head to Earth.

The Legion
Severely sheltered due to Colu's chosen isolation from more "primitive species," Querl's arrival on Earth and New Metropolis is expectedly stressful for him and his newly gained individualism. Seeking out something familiar and needing an outlet — Querl chose to work for the Time Institute. At the disbelief of much older and experienced scientists around him, he developed the first incarnation of time travel, the Time Bubble. During the months he spent at the facility, Querl slowly adjusted to humanity and the city.
And then a crime occurred outside of the Institute, prompting him to investigate and defend it with his cybernetic transformations and internal weaponry... until the Legion arrived to assist and take the villains responsible into custody. Impressed by them, Querl decided to try out for their recruitment as the earliest opportunity, taking the Oath as Brainiac 5 and becoming their head scientist, engineer and general strategist. During this time, he also developed the Flight Ring and several other handy technological advancements; not limited to his own laboratory within the Tower he helped design and build.

Fatal Five & Superman
With the Legion firmly established, but under scrutiny as a non-government body, they steadily amassed further members into the blooming organization. Putting away criminals on large and small scales — until such a time as news spread of the escape of a particularly difficult group.

The Fatal Five; comprised of varied powerful criminals that had taken the combined might of the Legion to put behind bars the first time. Weighing their options, Brainiac 5 suggested the best course of action was to call in backup — but not just any kind. Travelling to the past with Bouncing Boy and Saturn Girl, they sought the assistance of the then teenaged Clark Kent. Better known as Superman in the future. It took some convincing from the group, but Clark agreed to return back with them to assist.

Assistance that was sorely needed once the criminals had arrived on the Legion's doorstep. Despite the disadvantage and subsequent beating the planet-side members took, Clark was able to provide the necessary backup — as predicted. Even after the Emerald Empress sent herself and companions to parts unknown, it was enough to have neutralized the threat for the moment.
Unexpectedly, Superman chooses to remain for a time even after the danger had passed and is formally accepted into the Legion.
